SARAWAK POISED TO BECOME LEADING CATTLE MEAT SUPPLIER WITH NEW INVESTMENT IN AUSTRALIA

PRESS STATEMENT 25 May 2019

KUCHING – Sarawak is poised to become a leading halal beef supplier in ASEAN region and the Middle East with the acquisition of Carmor Plains Station in Darwin, Western Australia by Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC).

The acquisition of the new cattle station which has an area of 102,547 acres was also announced by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Bin Tun Abang Openg who recently led a delegation to Northern Territory of Australia enroute to SEDC’s Rosewood Cattle Station located in Western Australia.

The acquisition of Carmor Plains Station will become the new feeding and fattening centre for the 32,000 cattle belonging to its Rosewood Station.

It will be another investment for SEDC because of its accessibility to good feeding grounds for its cattle herds all year round. It will also provide a good breeding station for water buffaloes that SEDC exports to Limbang for domestication.

His Right Honourable Chief Minister of Sarawak made a visit to Carmor Plains Station and Rosewood Cattle Station in April this year.

Other members of the entourage were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah, Assistant Minister of Agriculture Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land and Regional Development Datu Ik Pahon Joyik and SEDC General Manager, Tuan Haji Abdul Hadi Bin Datuk Abdul Kadir.

The Chief Minister and his entourage earlier visited Rosewood Cattle Station which was acquired by SEDC in 1982 and covers an area of 731,834 acres including various facilities that complement Sarawak’s cattle business in Australia.

SEDC’s investments in cattle farming especially in Australia is fast moving forward and is providing annual dividends because our Rosewood station is able to provide adequate cattle meat supply for Sarawak’s domestic consumption as well as for export to ASEAN and Middle East countries.

Rosewood Station is planning to utilise the Carmor Plains Station for agistment or cattle fattening station that is capable of taking in approximately 5,000 to 7,000 heads of young weaner cattle every year so that they can later be exported.

SEDC is the a state-government agency entrusted to undertake the pioneering of cattle and livestock industry in Sarawak. The acquisition of Carmor Plains Station is a new initiative to elevate its role in cattle-farming overseas to a higher level because of its 37 years of experience in cattle farming in Western Australia.

For the record, SEDC has been in cattle farming since 1982 and there is a need to acquire reliable source of “out of season” feeding grounds for the expected growing number of cattle herds as well to cater to the global demand for quality halal cattle meat.

The prime locality of Carmor Plains Station is also another cost saving factor. It will enable SEDC to leverage on the close proximity to Darwin Port where the full grown cattle shall be shipped out for export markets.

There will be cost reduction in moving the thousands of cattle which are ready to be exported to other countries and thus providing better returns in the foreseeable future.

The acquisition of Carmor Plains Station has fulfilled all procurement procedures and due diligence in compliance with good corporate governance practices which SEDC upheld.

The decision to acquire Carmor Plains Station has been duly approved in the recent 181st SEDC Board Meeting on 5 March 2019 and also the Board of Directors’ Meeting of Rosewood Station Property Limited on 28 February this year.

Impacts from the cattle farming business initiatives by SEDC is benefitting the local economy because we have also supplied high quality Bulls (male) and Hyper (female) cattle breeds to Department of Veterinary Sarawak (DVS) under the government’s “Pawah Cattle” scheme.

SEDC has been seeking to acquire an additional property to further develop its cattle farming in Australia for the past 3 years and the Carmor Plains Station will enable it to move forward in becoming one of the leading exporters of halal meat in Malaysia.

With that I would like to conclude this morning’s press conference and I thank all of Media friends for taking their time to be with us. Please feel free to ask any questions and I will try to answer them.

Thank you.

Movable shed not to be erected without permission

22. Any person who erects or causes or permits to be erected, keeps or permits to be kept, on his land or the land which he occupies any movable shed or movable structure intended to act as a roof without the prior written permission of the local authority shall be guilty of an offence : Penalty, a fine of one thousand ringgit and the Court before whichthe person is convicted shall, on application of the local authority, make a mandatory order requiring such person to remove such movable shed or structure.
